Nicodemus Passion

The Monk of Salzburg’s extensive work contains one of the first passion settings in the early German language of the time, which has references to the text of the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus. The text of Nicodemus – a figure in the Gospel of John – was regarded of the people at the time as a “contemporary witness document” about the Passion of Christ. This text was very popular – today we find references in fine arts of the medieval time.

In our version, we divided the monk’s nine-verse song and added instrumental pieces that commented on the individual sections. Elaborate instrumentation ensures a sonorous experience of this medieval tale of the Passion story.
